Elf on the Shelf

We had a little elf join our family this year.  My son named him, Roger.

I know that some people hate on Elf on the Shelf.  It’s too much work, he’s creepy, kids shouldn’t have to earn their presents, etc.

However, in our house, he was nothing but awesome.  He does look kind of creepy, but I found it funny.  Like the time my husband put him on top of the TV and Roger sat there watching us like a creeper.  Or the time he ended up in the fridge watching my food choices.

We didn’t go too crazy with it.  My husband and I took turns putting him in really random spots around the house.  Or if my son is reading this, I mean Roger the Elf showed up in random spots around the house.  It was really fun to wake up and try to find him.

My son turned 3 this fall, and he is at an awesome age where he totally “gets” Christmas.  So when I told him that Roger the Elf is watching him and the choices he makes, he was very determined to make good choices.  It was amazing!  He would be whining about something and all I’d have to do is say, “Roger is watching you!  Is that really how you want to behave?”  And in the blink of an eye, he would snap out of it.  Awesome, right?

Well, anyone who has kids will could guess that this magic Elf parenting tool would stop working after a couple of empty, “The Elf is watching you” threats.  And it did.  We had a good 3 days of perfect angel behavior before the novelty wore off.
But then something hilarious happened.
On the first Saturday of every month, Home Depot has free workshops for kids to build little wooden crafts.  We go every month!  While we were at Home Depot, we actually spotted Roger the Elf.
See!

This only reaffirmed what I had been saying all along.  He DOES see your behavior.  He IS watching the choices you make.  He’s everywhere!
LOL

We made a ton of memories this season, but I have to say that Elf on the Shelf was my favorite, and Roger will definitely be coming back next year.  Maybe I’ll have some more time on my hands and I can get a bit more creative with him.
